What Information is available at these Prediction websites? Steve Preston maintains the main Asteroid Occultation Prediction website. It is from his information that all the other pages listed here derive their predictions. His site has predictions for all world locations where asteroid occultations will occur. As you explore his site, you will find information about past events, future events, and how to use his information with the OCCULT software package should you want to do your own predicting. Derek Breit's page contains specific prediction information useful for making maps of the predicted path using Google maps, determining how far an observer is from the predicted centerline, and probabilities for success - among many other things. To become familiar with all the tools at this site, one should pick a specific event that you plan to observe and download each item Derek has to offer. Sander Poole's website has a search option. Once you enter specific search values in the chart, his page will locate all the events that meet that criteria. It narrows down the choices found on Derek's page. Most of the same information about the prediction seen on Derek's page is presented on Sander's page. The input values are stored as a cookie on your computer so that you don't need to input them each time you visit the site. David Dunham often has information about specific observation projects that he is, or has been involved in. His site does not provide overall searches for events but, instead, focusses on events that he finds important. Brad Timerson runs the OCCULT software program in search of events that have a low probability of success. This may include small objects or objects with poorly known orbits. Observers should NOT travel for these events since the chance of success, even on the predicted centerline, is rather low. Instead, observe from home and use the experience as "practice" for more important events. One of the Coordinators, Tony George, indicates that he has a positive sighting for about 1 in 10 of these events. If confirmed, these positive observations are important for astrometric reasons. OCCULT WATCHER includes full search capabilities for asteroid occultations as well as a station locator. The program searches for events based on criteria you input, much like Sander's page. But, it also allows you to enter your observing station location and see where others are located. In this way, observers might be better able to spread themselves across the predicted path of the asteroid in hopes of better understanding the size and shape.
